New to the state, and was wondering

Historically, which was the more popular team; UVa or VTech (apparently neither really mattered much until the mid 80s)

Impossible for me to be impartial here (I'm a Hokie) but I will say Tech has been much more successful football-wise that UVA. Whether they are more popular or not isn't for me to answer but I know most Hokie fans would say we are

I went to UVA, and even I would admit that VT is a more popular team state-wide. In NoVA and Richmond you'll find a fair number of UVA fans (probably Hampton Roads as well), but the western half of the state is entirely Hokie territory.

Tech would seem to have the more popular team throughout the state. Personally, i'm a Tech fan because the starting QB this year is from my hometown of Hampton (Tyrod Taylor.)

Im from NoVa. Interesting assesment. Honestly, I couldn't tell you which is more popular, normally you can go by what is in the paper or on TV. But college football isn't covered as heavily as pro sports are here (same in most big cities in the North). Plus the terps are the ones most referenced in the post and on tv, even saw some terps gear at a Modell's in Arlington! I guess like Toledo, OH is to Ohio State vs. Michigan fans, NoVa is border country.

I agree that the Terps seem to get more attention in the DC area then either team. I would venture to guess that VTech gets more attention then UVA in general. Tech tends to have the more successful football team, and everyone loves success.

I've never understood the mascot though: is a Hokie a type of turkey? A turkey mascot is almost as silly as a turtle mascot.

I think you will find many many more VT fans then UVA fans in the Hampton Roads area, most likely not counting Richmond that holds true for the whole state

Va Tech was originally known as the Fighting Gobblers- hence the Turkey mascot. The term Hokie originated from a very old (1896) cheer that was written by a student at the time that was called the "Old Hokie" Cheer.

I don't have records in front of me, but the Welsh era at UVA (mid 80s - 2000 or so) was very successful. For 10-15 years they were on par with VT, possibly better. I was there in 94 with Tiki and Rhonde Barbor, beating FSU, it was pretty big. UVA has clearly fallen way behind Tech for the last 5-10 years.
