Default Looking for Walkable/Family Friendly Community in Harrisonburg VA

My husband and I are faced with the prospect of moving to Harrisonburg for work.

We currently live in the Old Southwest neighborhood of Roanoke VA and love the proximity to nature, small town vibe, family friendly neighborhoods, access to a very large park, farmer's markets and greenways. We're a 15 minute bike ride from the Blue Ridge Parkway but we live in town. We can walk to almost everything. We have a young child (4 months) and hope to live near other kids and families who also enjoy the outdoors, local food, etc.

Where should we look for housing that may have some of what we like above? (We hope to rent for 1 year before buying). Where should we look to find these rentals (in addition to craigslist and the local paper)?

Also, please feel free to share: What do you like Harrisonburg? What's great about it?

Thanks in advance - we really appreciate it!

I live about 2 miles from Preston Lake and love the look of the homes going up in the community. I don't know what your price range is but to my knowledge the townhomes are in the $400s and the single family homes are obviously more. There is suppose to be some retail going up eventually in the community which will be great for those of us who miss the variety of shopping that can be found in NOVA or Charlottesville. The quality of life seems great and friendly.

$400K for a townhouse in Harrisonburg? You've got to be kidding.
