Roanoke comes to mind. Its a bit different though, there aren't quite as many hippies as Asheville though lol.

Roanoke is a hidden secret although it has more urban issues. It is still a great place to live. There are tons of "small towns" in southwest VA. May I suggest Abingdon, Floyd, Wytheville? A bit north try Lexington, Buena Vista,
Clifton Forge, Buchanan. South of here try Rocky Mount. There are lots of similarities with those NC towns.

Roanoker ~~ what kind of urban issues are you referring to? Are they limited to one area? One part of downtown where you wouldn't go?

Thank you.

Default Urban

During the day walking anywhere downtown is safe. Even at night I wouldn't feel too concerned. There are areas on the periphery of downtown that is not the case. Roanoke is unlike most other neighboring cities is that we don't have the suburban sprawl with strip shopping centers that kill most downtowns. The downtown here has always been the center of it all. If you come here mostly everything worth seeing is in downtown Roanoke such as museums, art galleries, shops, restaurants, etc. There are enough attractions within a 50 mile radius to keep anyone busy.

Try Charlottesville I have lived there for a few years and it is nice, very close to the blue ridge parkway.

I do not consider Charlottesville a small mountain town. It is a college town with all that this status entails.

Monterey is a cute mountain town. It is very small and lacks commercial development. If you are looking for a town with lots of small shops to browse through, this is not the place. It has some, but not a lot.

Monterey is the county seat of Highland County, one of the least populated counties east of the Mississippi River.
