where would you choose? We are both 50 something and our son will be starting college in a few years and have been thinking of a more rural, slower paced lifestyle in the VA area. We don't want to be in total seclusion but would like a little space. I am a wood turner as a hobby and an outbuilding detached from the house would be supurb. House needn't be huge, but decent shape would be nice...don't mind driving a reasonable distance to shopping or restaurants, etc. A safe area, schools not an issue anymore, low taxes would be nice..any info would be appreciated, there are so many places to look, need help getting started...........thanks!

I just DM'd you some info about Shepherdstown WV. Also located in shepherdstown is Shepherd University a growing liberal arts college ranked #1 in WV and #30 in southern colleges.
Taxes here are lower than most surrounding areas, I think we pay around $1600 a year in real estate tax on my house with nearly 4 acres.
Let me know if you want any more info about the area.
Clint

If I could live anywhere in Virginia It'd be where I'm at, so I'm probably no help. IMO Hampton Roads is the best part, you have farmland and urban all in one metro

You have to be a little more specific. What are you looking for-closer to the beach or mountains. We were relocated from LI/NY in 2004 and lived in a suburban neighborhood, area code 23059-the west end of Richmond. It was close to the mall yet down the road were farms. We were in a planned community-our lot was 1/3 acre. We it loved the area and can't wait to move back -we were since job relocated out to the Midwest.

If you want to have a larger lot size but yet closer to amenities then look into Goochland county.

If you want more rural others will have to help me out. The mountains maybe Staunton-Charlottesville??

you might want to look into Mathews Country and even the rappahanock area. Very nice area, still close to larger metro areas, but more slower paced. Although I love my area (hampton roads), it may not be the most laid back area!! LOL!! We do have some rural areas, but check out the areas I mentioned first. Let me know if you need more information on that area. I don't service it as agent, but I do visit there : )

Also check out Whitestone area....
