Always remember, nobody WANTS to "power-commute"...

I do it out of necessity and affordability. If I could get a job that pays the same here I'd never travel over the mountains...

Agreed, 100 times over! If I could find something in the Winchester area, there would be no reason to head east -- except to meet up with friends!!!

Sorry to bring up an old post but it has been a while since I have been to this site.

Yes Winchester can be as you say frustratingly conservative at times..but really coming from someone who has worked and lived in the Winchester/Frederick County area for close to 25 years ( 15 on the radio there )..a lot of the local conservative attitudes came from the two local newspapers the Northern Virginia Daily and Winchester Star. Neither of which publishes a Sunday paper. But with that being said Winchester while it still is a very conservative community it still isn't as conservative as it was say 15 years ago. For starters there doesn't seem to be a lot of support in the area for Lisa Miller, she is the so-called ex-lesbian ( there is a reason why I say "so-called" ) who is fighting her former lesbian partner for full custody of their daughter. Had this happened say in 1995, the entire town would back up Lisa Miller. Also back in 1995, 99.3 The Fox WFQX, it was discovered that one of their djs had HIV. The protests, letters to the paper even the Winchester Star published an "open letter" to WFQX demanding the station to fire the dj because he had HIV. Today OTOH..say it was discovered that WINC-FM's Barry Lee or Q102's Chris & Rosie, if any of them have HIV ( I am NOT saying they do..just using them as an example !! )..I am pretty sure the community today will support them unlike they did with WFQX so many years ago. So as Dylan once sang about times are a "changin"...it is happening in Winchester.

Glad to hear this! I just bought a home in downtown Winchester and really like it so far! The people are really friendly. It doesn't strike me as being very conservative (whether it is or isn't as I cannot tell yet). Thanks for sharing your story. . .. it was nice to hear.
