King St. Metro to Rosslyn Metro BY CAR during rush hour? (Arlington: apartments, crime)

Short Version:

How long would it take to drive by car from the King St. Metro to the Rosslyn Metro during rush hour? And the return trip?

Do you guys and gals think we could make that commute in 30 minutes?

Longer Version:

My wife and I are looking at an apartment about .6 miles from King St. Metro. I will be working on a Ph.D. at the University of Maryland and my wife will be teaching in Arlington but will have to drop my son off at a daycare right next to Rosslyn. She won't be able to take the Metro because she has to take my son to daycare and travel between H.B. Woodlawn, Washington-Lee, Yorktown, and another school on different days and I am not sure if she will be able to make all of those stops in a timely manner without the car. I MUST take the Metro because my commute will be bad enough as it is.

We have found apts near BAllston, Courthouse, and Rosslyn Metros, but they all seem really expensive, small and/or not so nice. I found one in walking distance from King St. 3/2 roughly 1200 sq ft for 1650 with utilities included and I don't know if I can get that much bang for the buck anywhere else that is close enough to her job.

Do you guys and gals think she could make that commute in 30 minutes?

Yes, I would say so. There are a couple of back roads you could explore also, but the most direct route would be US-1 north, then VA-110 into Rosslyn. That will be crowded in the morning, but it should ease up some once you get north of I-395. Still, the whole trip is like seven miles or so. Even in the bad traffic, you can usually manage to average 4 mph, so I'd say you'd be under 30 minutes, but maybe some days not by so much.

i think you wont have many problems with that commute within 30 minutes. let me just say you got a steal on your prospective apartment. especially in alexandria city.

Thanks for the input. I will not see the apartment until next Monday, but I had to orally commit to it today to secure it. I quizzed the landlord pretty hard on it and it sounds pretty nice. I have looked for a month straight and have not seen a better deal. The ones I would have gone for would not deal with us over the telephone. We are in Florida at the moment, so we can't afford to fly up to look at something and then not get it. All things considered, we are ecstatic. Walk to the metro, stores, Old Town, Masonic Monument, etc. I lived in Alexandria before and worked on the Hill and loved everything about the area. My German wife and I prefer museums, ethnic food, walking, biking, and public transportation to the slow Florida live. We can't wait to make the move.

You might want to be wary of where your apartment is in old town for that price. There is a large public housing area within the distance you mentioned from the metro that has a lot of crime problems. If you are checking out the place over the phone check the location carefully. Also some of the apartments around there are pretty run down.
