Default A need for government?

For example... you can ride your mower on the street while drinking a beer, get a .08 (which was legal a few years back) and lose your license for over a year, go to jail, and lose your job. Get two .08's, and you're guaranteed jail, 3 years suspended lisence and some more goodies. I understand the consequences could include up to death for DUI, but a .08 with no accident or major risk of damage to property/life! Rediculous
I detest government interference as much as the next guy. Unfortunately there are people out there who really are stupid enough to drive their lawn mower down the street and even bigger idiots who would do so while drinking a beer. As long as people continue to behave in such unconscious ways, I'm actually in favor of the government stepping in and protecting the rest of us from such idiots. What if, another driver completely sober, with a clean driving record were to hit and kill the drunk idiot on the mower? In my mind, the drunk idiot is getting his just dessert, but what about the other driver. They have to live with this for the rest of their life, even though it wasn't their fault!

And how about the idiots who pollute OUR air with their stinking tobbacco and then throw their butts on the street, and give you the finger if you ask them nicely to pick it up? You can argue that it's their lungs and they have the right to kill themselves if they want to, and I agree. BUT, I and all of the other non-smokers end up paying higher health insurance premiums becasue of these idiots. So again, I believe the government has an obligation to step in and regulate smoking because some people are just too stupid to do it voluntarily.

regards...Franco

That being said, I do agree if you don't like the rules you either move on or try to change things. I did move on as far as the HOA thing is concerned as I stated. I'm not a chronic complainer and certainly no whiner, just trying to learn the ropes on this forum as I'm relatively new. I wasn't prepared for your retort at all, but I'll know better in the future how to word things so as not to seem a crybaby. But, as Blaydese also noted, perhaps you should also consider how you come across. You're probably nice enough but you come across as very angry, bordering hostile.
Hostile, not but really tired of "ignorance of the law" that people repeatedly use and the whining involved with the "it's not fair" crowd.

I thought it was a little much given the circumstances. Did I mention the drug dealers are still dealing?

Its not ignorance of the law that upsets me or makes me bitter at times. Its the knowledge of them how gov't (yours & my) funds are used to enforce them, eg. busting drug dealers vs. jay walkers.

I totally agree with you on that!

However, if I was a cop ( not a chance ) I'd rather pursue jaywalkers than drug dealers for the money I'm getting paid and it's alot safer too.

some of these laws are already laws in ny. my cousins live in va and they were telling me some of the laws down there, and to be honest they went over my head. i think va is a great state, and most likely will be moving down there in a couple of years, but one thing that really concerns me is all the laws. when i tell people how great va is, i also have to mention how ridiculus some of their laws are.
the no-smoking in restaurants has been in affect in new york for a few years.
many people, especially in nyc were very upset, and many were "going outside to have a smoke" and walking out on their bill leaving restaurant owners at a loss.
the "nothing hanging from your rear-view mirror" totally already a law in ny.
i think its complete crap. and i dont think it distructs your view at all. many teenagers, and females have their tassels from graduation, hawaiian leis, beads, car air fresheners hanging from their mirrors as "decorations" and i dont think it distucts view at all. i mean, im not looking at whats hanging on my mirror when im driving on the interstate. the only time i really look at any of that stuff is when i first get in the car.

however i think the state (VA) should be more concerned with talking on cell phones... which also can be a bit ridiculus at time. Im not sure, but I think in VA your still allowed to talk on your cell while driving (??) Anyways, up here in NY your not allowed to be on your cell phone while driving... unless its handsfree or bluetooth. so you'll get a ticket for holding your phone, and not having both hands on the wheel, but you wont get pulled over for holding a bottle of water, or a burger from mcdonalds.. i think the law needs to be revised. the problems not with holding something.. its with having a conversation, and being more worried about what someones saying, rather than what color the traffic light is, and where the heck the tree you just hit came from. so talking on ur phone and driving should be banned all together. forget about handsfree!.

so i guess both va and ny laws can be pretty crazy. i guess its like that in all states, but i really have to agree with you guys, va laws are really outta hand.

I support tough dui laws as well. The prob I have with va is they keep lowering the alc. Limit to include thoses who aren't drunk.
Why do non smokers in va go out of their way to find a smoking restaurant just so they can complain about it. Enough with the smoking ban already. It's proven that there is no conection between heart/lung and second hand smoke

I have walked out 3 restaurants until I found a smoking one.

Let me know what you think is next... Take my poll.

The post you are replying to is over 2 years old. The only support you could find was the British Medical Journal? Here in America, we strongly believe that second hand smoke does kill. Secondhand Smoke: Questions and Answers - National Cancer Institute
And the BAC level is .08 in every state that I know of.

If you look online, you'll find websites that list many other ridiculous laws in other states. Did you know, for instance, that fuzzy dice on the rearview mirror are actually illegal in Virginia? As is cursing and being nude in front of women and children in Montana? Also, premarital sex among people of ANY age (children or adults) is actually a JAILABLE offense in Virginia. Fun stuff eh?
Premarital Sex jailable? Oh please tell me more...
