Question laid back, fun loving Va...?

I am looking to move from Richmond area to somewhere a couple hours west, or as far sw as the Lexington area. I want to be able to have a house and 5+ acres, where horses are allowed and trail riding is nearby. I would like to be in a scenic area with lots of sunshine - no humidity, lol! - and within a 45 minute drive of interesting shopping, not just Walmart. Employment is covered as long as high speed internet is available. Depending on house sale, can afford about $350k. I am originally from up north and have had difficulty fitting in with people in this area. I am considered somewhat eccentric, but actually I am openly friendly and fairly open minded and enjoy not taking myself or life too seriously, whenever possible. I do enjoy friendly debating of current issues. Can anyone offer suggestions of friendly, accepting areas? I have lived in the Richmond area for over 20 years. Thanks!

Default Contemplated moving

My wife and I live in North Florida: she's a executive administrator and I am a heavy equipment operator II for the city we live in. She will be receiving a "promoted" position with her present employer located in Mclean, Va. We are looking for an apartment between 700 and 900 monthly, with no more than a 30 - 45 minute commute. We have a 6 month old infant, so day care will be necessary. We are looking for an area that promotes family values and a safe environment to raise a family. I hope I have given all if not enough information. We appreciate your opinions and guidance. Thank you in advance.

Smile Looking to relocate to Virginia Beach Area

Hi Everyone! I was hoping that I could get some advise about moving to va beach. We've been to the oceanfront alot..but there's alot of that area I know nothing about! It's my husband and I and our 4 kids. Unfortunately, we dont have the big bucks to relocate to the beach and buy a house so we'll be renting. If any knows of an area thats not crazy expensive to rent (like 700-1000) , thats safe for our kids, good schools very important! one in 1st, one in 5th, and one in 10th. We dont want to be right in the middle of things, but yet a close drive to stores and restaurants would be a plus! Thanks!

JAZZY22, Amherst County (Route 60 West of Richmond) or Nelson County (Route 6 west of Richmond) may be the answer to your search.

They are developing a horse hiking trail that follows the Tye River east from Piney River that is located on Route 151. The trail follows the old Virginia Blue Ridge Rail Road right of way. Tye River separates the two counties.

There are plenty of mountains and flatland property available. The Wintergreen resort is located in Nelson County.

Default This must be a "sign"

-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate

We on the Virginia forum would appreciate it if you included the above information in your initial post so you can get the information you want as quickly as possible and we would not have to repost the same questions for every thread. Thank you.

PS: WTB Sticky.
My husband and I are SERIOUSLY thinking of moving form California...who can afford to live here anymore?! Anyhow, I so happen to come across this site and here is this post! IT'S A SIGN!!!! lol. So please, any help we can get will be GREATLY appreciated...we've heard great things about Va., but I would like to get more opinions.

1. Husband is a RN-currently working as an EMS educator for L.A. City Fire and picks up shifts as a registered nurse.
2.Housing? Well, that would depend on what income he can get as an RN there.
3. He drives 2 hrs into LA now, so commute wouldn't be an issue if anything less than that!
4.kids: 14 yrs old, 11yrs old and 1.5 yr old. Public would be fine.
5. Country or suburbia would be a GREAT change from city.
6.PIE!!!!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give...p.s. we considering Mo too, so if anyone has pro and cons on Va better than Mo, thanks!

Hi Luvbnmom03,

We chose the Richmond area when researching different cities in VA. We have been here now for almost 3 years and love it! Since your husband is an RN, you'll be happy to know there are many good hospitals and VCU as potential employers. The city has a rich history and many unique places for you to explore. There are also lots of ethnic restuarants to choose from if you like trying new cuisine too.

There are many family-friendly things to do all the time as well. We love Maymont Park, Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, the Children's museum, Pocohontas State Parks, Carytown, and the list goes on. DC, the beach and mountains are not too far either. The weather is fairly mild so you can get outdoors most of the time.

The people we've met here have been very kind and down to earth. From what I can tell, they seem to value their kids education as much as we do.

There are also lots of suburbs to chose from too. We focused on the areas west of the city and have been really happy here. We are located about 30min. from the city in the Chesterfield area. Although there a many other good areas too with excellent schools, we chose this area due to it's quality of schools, proximity to the city and affordability. I'm sure there are others on here that can provide you with more insight on their areas too!

I just wanted to let you know that the entire area is a wonderful place to raise your kids and have lots of fun doing it

Best wishes with whatever you decide!

Dear Smerky,

I am looking for a summer home/retirement home around Lancaster County. Schools and commuting distance to jobs are not issues. Ideally, we would like to be on the water with a protected dock and easy access to the Chesapeake. Price range is $700,000 to $1 million. I am interested in views on the various towns - White Stone, Reedville, Urbana, Gwynn Island. Is the area friendly - does it get overrun with tourist in the summer? Looking for a quiet area that is peaceful, friendly and not pretentious.

Thank you!

Of the areas you asked about Urbanna is probably the largest tourist area. That being said it still doesn't draw very many except when they have their annual Oyster Festival. White Stone, Reedville, Gwynns Island/ Mathews would be the less pretentious area in my opinion.
