READ if you are asking about where to live in VA
There's been many threads recently from people requesting information on which cities to live in in Virginia. If you are about to post one of these information request threads, please include the following:
-Where you are working
-How much you are willing to spend on housing
-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate
-If you have kids: Private school or public school?
-What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: small town feeling? small city excitement? suburbia delight?
-Community amenities important to you
-Pie or cake?
We on the Virginia forum would appreciate it if you included the above information in your initial post so you can get the information you want as quickly as possible and we would not have to repost the same questions for every thread. Thank you.
PS: WTB Sticky.

Good call SmerkyGrl. It would also help to suggest that people search the forums before posting. Odds are someone has already asked the same or similar question and the forum residents have already addressed it. Just type your hypothetical city name and your main issue (like 'Fairfax Schools' or 'Midlothian crime') and see what you get.

Also it would help if people put where they would like to move to in their topic title. I am getting a little tired of the "I'm moving to VA!" threads... well no duh, that's why you posted here. :P and the ones "I'm moving from XXXXX State" ok, that's nice, but it tells me nothing about what you'd like to know about VA... non-descriptive thread titles make it hard (well, just takes me longer) to find which threads are relevant to what I know, and which are about Roanoke, so I can let Sean reply.
:P
Also, I vote for Pie 100%... Cake is for losers.

VA or MD?
My family and I are moving out to the DC area from CA, but we do not want to live in DC. We are looking at Annapolis, and surrounding areas in MD, and we are also considering VA. But, we don't know where to start. Maybe you have some advice? We are a family of 5, one high school student, two in Kindergarten (twins). My husband is going to be working a lot in DC and some in Baltimore. He'd like to take the metro when possible. We would like an area that is country-ish, because out here in CA having country/land is very difficult. We can spend between 390 - 480K on a house. We don't want to be in hicksville, but yet we don't want suburbia haven either. We definitely want good schools, and ideally some cultural diversity. Thanks if you can help

i don't know but I am thinking you can get a townhome maybe in a half decent school system maybe, Annapolis is very expensive, I know people who make great money, and they had to leave cause it was too expensive, maybe someone else can help you more here, good luck 2 you.

Hawaii to Virginia
Hello Everyone. We will be moving to Virgina from Hawaii. We need to be within about an hour of DC or Richmond. Hampton looks nice and would work though it would be pushing it distancewise. Were looking for a small town feel and boating attmosphere which is why we are attracted to Hampton. We can afford about 400k. Ideally a place with a downtown we could walk to dinner shopping etc. We have a 4 year old so schools are important. I work out of the house so I don't commute but being close to an airport would be a plus. We are not adverse to townhouse living. I have no desire for a large yard and 2000 sf is plenty. Any insight would be appreciated.
Aloha

I grew up and was stationed in VA so I feel like I have the right to vote; a rich, gooey-thick frosted chocolate cake!
