I can't avoid heading down from Falls Church, VA to Wilmington, NC area at 3pm on Friday May 25 - into the height of Memorial Day traffic escaping Wash DC metro area. I'm afraid I95 will be a mess until Richmond even though I could use HOV until it ends around Quantico. I think I'm going to try going west on I66 to Rt29 to I64 to Richmond, then continue on to NC. Anybody ever try this or have other suggestions for a bypass of I95 in Northern VA? I'm sure Rt 1 paralleling 95 won't be any better than 95. Will 66 and 29 be almost as bad as 95?
Thanks.

In my (limited) experience, heading west on 66 any time after noon on a Friday is bad news. Many people have cabins/etc out along 81 and head out there many/most weekends. I bet everyone who has a cabin will be heading out this weekend. Might be worth a shot though...

Man I feel bad for you! I don't think anyway heading south on Friday afternoon will be good...first good beach weekend too.

Try getting out before 3pm if you can and use the HOV lane. (even 15 sometimes can make a huge difference!) Most folks won't take friday off, so they will be leaving early. I would think by 4pm it will be a big mess.

I would think that maybe 29 wouldn't be bad esp past Culpeper but that is also going west from where you want to be...so you'll eventually have to cut over to 64 to get east and then you'll run into Richmond rush hour.

no good way around it. me I think I just might get sick and head down tonight!! seriuosly though as much as I hate I95 I think I'd have to take my chances on it!...leave at 2pm!!!

you MIGHT be better taking 495 (outer-loop) over the WW bridge, and then exiting onto Rt. 5 south... that will take you straight down to Rt. 301... and then 301 will take you over the toll bridge ($3), and then all the way down to 295 in Richmond... I hear that the toll bridge can back up too though, so who knows if it'll be faster... at least it's something to think about when you're checking the traffic reports. (www.511virginia.org)

Hadn't thought of the 301 route. In the end I'll probably stick with I95, but just before heading out I'll chug a couple beers and let my teenage son do the driving while I take a nap:-)
