It seems like a lot of the apartments near Pentagon City are more in my price range when compared to the places closer to the Orange line.

My question is about the safety of this area. Specifically, I've noticed there are a lot of apartments on Columbia Pike (?) and I wanted to get some opinions on whether I should bother to look in this area.

Pentagon City has experienced a lot of development over the past 10 or so years. It has a nice mall and a few surrounding shopping centers with apartment buildings and office complexes mixed in. I would say it's pretty safe considering the amount of offices/commercial activity in the area. Just be smart is all. The mall is a center of activity and supports a suburban style nightlife (bars and restaurants, but no clubs or shows). There are additional apartment buildings further south towards Crystal City that are close to a metro too. Crystal City is a little less refined than Pentagon City IMO, but that's just because it's an older area a little past its prime. Crystal City is also somewhat more urban than Pentagon City.

Columbia Pike isn't near any metro stops, fyi. You'll be able to catch busses to the City and/or Metro stops though. It's not necessarily unsafe, but I wouldn't walk around alone at night if I were female. It also has some neghborhoods with a heavy immigrant population.

Can anyone suggest a modern 2/2 with a 1700/mo budget or less. I would like to live in Alexandria and walk to a Metro stop. Moving from Ft Lauderdale with a teenager to work downtown DC.
