We just located here with our two young children and are renting in Mclean. Could never afford to buy a house here, went to Ashburn yesterday and can't imagine living in such developed communities. Any area similar to Mclean but more affordable? I know, I am asking for a lot!

Have you looked around the area much? You might take a drive on the GW Parkway South of Old Town down to Mount Vernon and look at some of the neighborhoods along there. Most of the neighborhoods there are more mature and not "cookie cutter".

Don't really know your budget, but you might also look at some of the neighborhoods off Sleepy Hollow Road in the unincorporated part of Falls Church - there are older houses in a range of styles, so the feel is similar to some of the older neighborhoods in the 22101 part of McLean, but the houses are definitely less expensive.

vienna is just as nice as mclean and is closer to everything IMO. There are some extremely expensive houses that sky rocket into the millions, but there are average priced neighborhoods as well. My mother's house is a single floor split level style house with more yard than she can handle. I believe it is priced around 500k.

Mt Vernon has considerably high crime rates in Fairfax County.

Miles away on Route 1 but not the neighborhoods along the parkway. Lived here 20 years and rarely lock my doors. It's a lot prettier here along the Potomac than in Vienna.

Thank you for your input. Looking in the 500000-600000 range. My husband works in Arlington.

Between Old Town and Mt Vernon, take a look at Hollin Hills - Home

As CAVA replied, you're obviously looking at crime rates along Rt 1 in the "Mt Vernon District". The communities along the GW Parkway and Fort Hunt Rd are not plagued by crime - Waynewood, Stratford Manor, Yacht Haven, Hollin Hall, etc.

If I wanted something more suburban than where I am in Alexandria, those areas would be high on my list.
