That whole area around Virgina Beach and Chesapeake, is that area like Long Island, NY? I've been to VA several times and have friends and family there. Area reminds me of Long Island. Obviously house prices and taxes are much less than long island. But how is the life/living part? Employment? Anyone move from around here in NY (LI, QUEENS, BRooklyn) down there experiences? We are considering a move to this area but our main concern is employment and how much less is the pay. Our two friends who moved from this area experiences are as follows:

friend 1 moved down to a job in a different field and is paid less
friend 2 moved down to same job field getting paid $15,000 more

please share your insight.

I have relatives who live in that area and its really not that bad! I read an article(don't remember where)that said the Va Beach/Norfolk areas' economy is projected to improve significantly. Its a major port city plus the Navy is there, of course so it always seems to be a busy place. I have friends from Long Island and it does look similar in some ways I guess. You could pick much worse places in my opinion! Good Luck!

Plus, I don't think the "yankee" thing is that much of a big deal in Va Beach/Norfolk like it apparently is in booming NC cities from this site.
It seems in that area most people are from somewhere else anyway.

The Va. Beach /Hampton Roads areas is full of military....Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Hampton...all are military! People come and go.

The cost of living is much less than NY, and therefore, the salaries will be lower, depending on what you do! It's not a bad area...just really spread out....

No it's not like Long Island but the cost of living is lower which is a plus! The beach culture is prominent in VA beach of course. Hampton roads doesn't have a lot of italians and Jews also no delis like you see around Long Island. It's still very much Virginia, the weather is better than Long Island by a mile
