I've searched the forums and I've found so much information and different advice that my head is just spinning. I know others have probably asked similar questions, but none exactly fit my personal preferences as far as what's important in a town... So bear with me.
We're looking for the following in a town:
-Good public schools
-Very family-friendly (have 3 young kids)
-Lots of outdoor recreation including fishing / boating
-Milder climate (as far as mtn vs. valley)
-Blue collar / middle class
-3br home for $150k or so
-A Target would be nice, but not essential
-More liberal than conservative. Basically open-mindedness and a "greener" community would be nice.
-Beautiful scenery, i.e. lots of trees, water, mtns...
-Size: anywhere from 5,000 (with bigger city within 30 min) to 50,000 people
-And, perhaps, most importantly, LOW CRIME
All the cities I've checked into I've had to mark off the list for one reason or another. SW Roanoke looks great but is so expensive. Can't really find any decent housing in our price range. Am I asking way too much?? Or does my ideal city actually exist?
