My 3 year / 36 thousand mile manufacturers warranty is set to expire at the end of this month (due to the 3 years as I only have 15,000 miles).

I contacted the dealer, and I have until the expiration date to purchase an extended warranty, there are several plans to choose from (Platinum, Gold Plus, Gold, Silver, etc). I believe an additional 5 yrs and 60k miles is like $3500. I own a 2013 CC R-Line. I don't fix my own cars.

Does anyone have any experience this this "extended warranty"?

Just to clarify, you are talking about the manufactures extended warranty program through Volkswagen that is just administered by Fidelity and not a Fidelity Warranty Services extended warranty plan. They are basically the same but the Fidelity provided plan is cheaper and not specific to the manufacture. The VW plan is basically the same for a few dollars more but is fully backed by Volkswagen.

You might check with your bank or credit union for Mechanical Breakdown coverage (aka "extended warranty"), it will likely be the same/similar coverage as the dealer is offering but cheaper. Dealers typically mark up the coverage considerably.

I would check with your service / repair facility. You need to make sure they will honor this warranty. Also ask your service advisor or service manager what they think of the warranty.
