VW’s strategy shift comes as 2 more German cities start to ban diesel engine vehicles.

Haven't they been selling the E-Golf for years now? From what I can tell its market penetration has been 'modest'.

I doubt VW's offering will be a "Tesla rival" except in the sense it's an EV. Tesla, while having continuing quality and QA problems, still aims for an upscale-into-luxury market. They have yet to even plan a Chevy Nova-class car, because the margin would be too thin and it would drag down the brand image.

But VW can do a spare, vinyl-seat, no-real-frills mobile and get away with it.

Well, with zero advertising, and an 80-100 mile range, I'm sure that the market penetration IS "modest."

It's no coincidence that the most advertised vehicles are also the perennial top sellers...

The gonna pull out some 50 year old Beetle tooling and stick a battery under it?
That's about the only way they're gonna make an EV with any range for less than $23K.

Not necessarily. Tesla has spent too much trying to make EVs 'superior.' Detroit has spent too much time trying to make EVs 'just as good.' VW is perfectly positioned to make - well, yes, the Beetle of the 2020s.

50 yrs of EV ... nice progress!

btw: Recently saw one of the Beetles we (ex- company / group of engineers) made into EV's in 1976, it's still running fine. (several upgrades later)

My favorite was our MGB-GT EV conversion. Also did Courier, Cortina, TR-3, Simca, Datsun, Toyota
Rabbit owners are partial to Mr. Sharkey's EV - Pusher. (range...300 Miles (482 Kilometers))

We had EV plug-in parking at every USA factory location in 1976. ~10 factories (CA / OR / CO / MA

To bad Tesla’s fit and finish sucks.

Wall Street analysts tore down...

Have YOU done a Tesla Fit and Finish evaluation?

As a Manf Engineer, I have been pretty impressed with the F&F I have seen in the (6) I have looked at for competitive analysis (I'm Not a Wall Street analyst who tears down cars on weekends.!)

The performance /safety / ride quality / features / manf / (including 'fit and finish') is very impressive for a company that has been pumping out production cars for < 10 yrs.

Detroit could not pull this off in last 140 yrs. (oops.. I was there last week dealing with auto sheetmetal suppliers...)

VW does not even sell gas rivals to the Tesla at that price, let alone an electric rival.
