Thanks! We are looking at a home to buy in Clarksville and my husband works in Gaithersburg. Any insights greatly appreciated.
The other areas we are looking at are Rockville, N. Potomac and Boyds.

It's a long way, but 108 is probably the best route as far as Olney, then it's easy to Gaithersburg from there. North Potomac would be better though as it's right next to the city.

I sometimes take the route to clarksville for traveling to BWI from Gaithersburg. You can try Sundown road just east of Laytonsville then right on New Hampshire Rd then left onto Brighton Dam Rd to you meet up with 108. Not a bad drive most of the time.

MD 108 has a higher volume of traffic.
