Looking for an upscale restaurant to take my MIL to celebrate her 80th birthday. Her one request was that it not be French cuisine. Open to surrounding areas of Bethesda.

If you're open to going to DC (Palisades, not downtown), you might like Black Salt on MacArthur for seafood. Although, you can also go to the Garrett Park outpost of the same restaurant family, Black Market, that would be a nice lunch or brunch spot, too, with a bit more variety in the menu. Black's Bar and Kitchen is in Bethesda, on Woodmont Avenue, though the setting of the Market is preferred by some I know.

The Chef Geoff's family are also recommended, either Lia's for contemporary Italian in Chevy Chase, or Chef Geoff's on New Mexico Avenue in DC. You can park in the same complex as the restaurant on New Mexico, as there is a small garage and open lot. It's $5 when they collect fees for parking, but complimentary in the evening.

Niormandie Farms, Falls Road, Potomac. A little further out but worth the drive, if only for the popovers! Oh, I do miss them.

(Just noticed the "not French" note but Normandie Farms -- name notwithstanding -- has lots of wonderful choices)

We ended up going to Normandie Farms due to location and the brunch selection. Their brunch is not French cuisine but many, many tasty dishes and a large variety. Since we had 11 in our party we actually got a private room. Definitely recommend. Thanks for the suggestions.

French restaurant? Your mother-in-law would have turned 81 before the main course was served.

I'm not sure if this would qualify as "upscale", but Haandi is fabulous.
