My husband's job is moving him to DC and we would like to find a suburb community that has affordable housing, safe, good schools and an approx. hour commute door to door into DC. After looking at housing prices and greatschools.org, Germantown seems to fit that description. The schools seem to be average or above avg. What are some kid friendly neighborhoods? Or what neighborhoods should we stay away from? Is the crime really going up? We have a two year old and plan to have another. Is Germantown a good place for my child(ren) to grow up?

Also, please explain to me the transit stations and schedule? Does the Metro red line stop in Germantown, if not what is the closest station and is there a bus to to the station? Also, my husband will most likely be working off peak hours on week days. Does the metro or Marc run all night or at least late in the evening? We are used to NYC subway system that runs all the time. The Metro and Marc websites do not show time tables later than 8:00pm.

Thank you,
Christine
Brooklyn, NY

Last MARC out of DC is at 7:15 pm.

Metro runs until midnight on weekdays. However, the last stop on the metro red line is Shady Grove which is in Rockville.

Also MARC into DC is not always on time, regularly 10-15 minutes late, have that in mind when planning your commute.

cheers.

If you factor in commuting time just to get to a MetroRail/MARC/bus station, whether that's via driving, biking, or taking public transit, the commute to DC (you didn't specify where in DC) from Germantown is likely going to be more than one hour.

Living closer in mitigates this, but naturally, home prices rise accordingly.

If I were you, I would add North Potomac to your search. I think the area fits what you're looking for. There's MARC stations in Germantown and Gaithersburg. Metro stops at Shady Grove (near I-370). There are buses from there to various places, including express buses to Germantown. There are lots of good transportation options, but only up to about 10 pm (if using the bus) or midnight (if driving and parking at Metro).

Thanks. everyone for you input. I am starting to get a better sense of the area and the way commuting into DC works. We only have one car so that means we really need to be close to a metro station so that my DH can walk or take a short bus ride. I now understand Germantown is too far away. Looking closer at Takoma Park and Silver Spring.

Any info about these areas would be appreciated.

Speaking of MARC, any idea what the parking situation is like at the Germantown station? Is parking free? What time does the lot fill up?

Metro hours of operation:

5am-midnight (Monday-Thursday)
5am-3am (Friday)
7am-3am (Saturday)
7am-midnight (Sunday)

Metro is and functions like a subway system and is a lot more rapid then commuter rail.
MARC however is limited, especially on the Brunswick line.

Marc parking in germantown is free, but packed if you try to catch train later than 8:00AM. I use to catch 7:46Am train from Germantown to DC. I never have a problem finding parking. Keep in mind, Marc is always late, esp winter time. normally 5-10 minutes, sometimes an hour. Good Luck.
