I will be moving to MD soon and my job is between Baltimore and DC so I am considering both places for renting. I will be fresh out of college so I am looking to live among others my age who are just starting out in their careers. I also want to be close to some night life (physically close or a train/bus ride away). I have been looking at Baltimore, Federal Hill specifically, and Silver Spring. I just have a few questions:

Is it practical to live in SS near the metro and ride the shuttle into DC at night to get to some night life? SS doesn't seem to have a whole lot of hot spots, could be wrong.

What are some other places that might interest me that have a more urban feel but wouldn't make it difficult getting outside the beltway or out of Baltimore during the commute? I don't mind driving I just hate sitting dead in traffic.

Right now I am really liking Federal Hill in Baltimore but I just feel like I would fit in DC more being young and out of state with a type A complex. Any advice appreciated!

if you're young, the best move would be to get a place in a location that's close to all the fun stuff you like to do without working just to pay your rent. baltimore is a big city and is more affordable but ss is closer to dc with a more urban/culturally hip vibe. bmore is a more segregated city; racially, culturally, and economically. having said that, i'd choose bmore over ss.

I vote for silver spring. you can ride the metro anywhere around dc and nova. In federal hill, you won't be able to go anywhere except by car or a long walk. Apartments are overpriced in both places.

I know this is between Silver Spring and Bmore, but why not live in DC? Is budget a factor?

DC, overall, is better than Bmore hands down with exception to cost. However, Ward 5 in DC is relatively affordable and in the city with access to metro and a nightlife.

If you just cannot afford to live in DC, go with Silver Spring.

Untrue. Served by two bus lines including the free Charm City Circulator and the Light Rail Hamburg St stop.
