I currently live in Alexandria and have been here for just over 1 year. The wife and I are preparing to buy a house very soon. We love the city/urban feeling but need a safe neighborhood to raise our children in. I currently work in Bethesda and am amazed by the beauty of that city. The downtown is very nice and the neighborhoods are beautiful. I don't know a lot about the area! I know MD has its rough areas but it looks like the majority of those reside in Prince George County. What are your thoughts on Montgomery County and the Bethesda area? I know it's pricey but my wife and I are prepared to sacrifice for a great neighborhood.

I'm not sure how the Maryland forum was slow in responding to you as this is your post.

FWIW, this transplanted Virginian's view is that if you like Alexandria and Arlington, you'll love Bethesda and Chevy Chase...and maybe even Rockville as well. Those three areas are likely among the most desirable in the close-in DC suburbs.

But I'll let actual MD residents take it from here.

Also be prepared to sacrifice for PEPCO ! (Power Outages in Bethesda)

Bethesda residents criticize Pepco over numerous power outages

I happen to think that area is filled with rude people who drive escalades and think they own the world. Its very affluent. All i see there is congestion on streets, honking horns, etc. But the area also is about as safe as it gets. I mean you can actually walk the streets at night and not get mugged. The neighborhoods are mixed with new and old homes, and theres a lot of construction up there. For a urban enviroment it rates number 1 on the safety scale.
