Construction begins on Watkins Mill Road extension in Gaithersburg

Construction has started on Watkins Mill Road Extended, a planned six-lane highway connecting the existing road that dead ends east of Interstate 270 at Maryland 355.

The extension is the first step in a process to connect both ends of Watkins Mill Road with a bridge over I-270. The state eventually will build an interchange at I-270 and Watkins Mill Road to relieve congestion in the area, according to a county press release.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation's Division of Transportation Engineering has begun work on the roadway, but the bridge and interchange will not be built until later, said Greg Ossont, Gaithersburg's director of Planning and Code Enforcement.

BP Realty Investments, which owns the land, built a four-lane portion of Watkins Mill Road from west of I-270 to an existing section east of Clopper Road. The developer is paying almost 25 percent of the cost for the project, and the county and city of Gaithersburg are funding the rest. The developer also has set land aside for the interchange and a new 6th District County Police Station.

Construction is expected to take about six months.

Watkins Mill Road Extended will be a six-lane highway that includes a sidewalk, bike path and street lighting, according to a county press release. The Humane Society of the United States has helped create a wildlife management plan to move vulnerable animals away from the path of the project.

The road should be completed next summer at a cost of $7.7 million.

Skate Park Upgrades Installed
Time To Shred - Gaithersburg, MD Patch

Time To Shred
The renovated Gaithersburg Skate Park is set to open in April.

Just in time for Spring Break, the Gaithersburg Skate Park will open for the season on April 15 with some new additions.

The park has been renovated over the winter and now features an ultra-smooth surface and improved ramps.

"Skating features include an escalator, wall ride, quarters, stairs, mini half-pipe, rails, boxes and more," according to the City website. There is also an outdoor stereo system and vending machines.

Located at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, just feet from Gaithersburg High School, the skate park is a popular after-school hangout.

"Regular hours will be weekdays from 3 p.m. to sunset and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to sunset. Special extended hours will be in place during Spring Break, April 18 through April 25, when the park will open daily at noon," the website says.

Although the park was designed with skateboarders and in-line skaters in mind, BMX bikes are allowed every day except Wednesday and Saturday.

Admission is $3 for residents and $5 for non-residents, and season memberships are available for $35 and $50 for residents and non-residents respectively.

Gaithersburg to build two new playgrounds and add Toddler Pool to Bohrer Water Park

Gaithersburg Soliciting Bids for Park, Water Park - Gaithersburg, MD Patch

Gaithersburg is soliciting bids to build two new playgrounds at Bohrer Park for $150,000 in funds from the federal government, according to a request for proposal released by the city.

One playground area is for 5 to 12-year-olds, and will feature multiple slides of different types, a pyramid rope climb and a rock wall climb. The other area, designed for 2 to 5-year-olds, will have a single structure with a double slide and talk tube. The designer will have the option of building a conventional deck structure, or one in the shape and theme of a train.

Bohrer Park, located on South Frederick Avenue next to Gaithersburg High School, features water and skate parks, as well as an activity center that houses basketball courts and a fitness center.

The city was also accepting proposals to renovate Bohrer's water park until Dec. 15. The renovations will include a new gutter system and the construction of a toddler's pool.

agree with MARC slightly dissagree with red line extention. The problem isnt the redline or MARC neither alone will get anyone out of their cars the problem is http://mta.maryland.gov/services/commuterbus/sitemap/MARC_Commuter_Connecting.pdf (broken link)

the regional lines that would get them out of their cars are actually the commuter buses BUT THEY ONLY RUN UNIDIRECTIONAL AND AT RUSH HOUR ONLY!!!! except line 201 shady grove to BWI. Most of the traffic is in the REVERSE DIRECTION AND DURING OFF-PEAK. The commuter buses are ALWAYS FULL except the new 200 series rtes. The commuter buses that take ppl from places like warldof, Hagerstown, lexington park and bel air to DC and baltimore. If the commuter buses ran all day then ppl would be able to transfer between them in DC and baltimore. Then the buses will GET THE REGIONAL cars off the road while for travelling around montgomery and DC the ppl will connect with the metro and busways. The busways and LRT will get cars off the road if they are focused with connecting REGIONAL travellers!!!! plus there is the rideon 75 and 100 which take you to clarksburg. just make 75 and 100 one line. the MARC brunswick line wont get ppl out of their cars unless on-time performance increases enough to warrant a service enhancement!!!!
