Hello Everyone,

I may be getting a job in the Frederick area. I am from NJ so I am not familiar at all with the area. I am married with 2 small boys (4.5 and 2) so I would like an area with good schools and things for them to do. I like suburbia (small yards and a big shopping mall nearby) and would want to buy a house in the 260-300 range. Also we are jewish. I have not heard anything so I am not accusing anyone in MD of being anti-Semitic, but I want to make sure I move to a community that is friendly (also I am a Steelers fan so I know I will already be picked on by Ravens fans so I am ready for that ). Any help is appreciated!

How about starting in Frederick. Your price range should fit well there and the town in ringed with suburban developments.

Frederick sounds like it will work well for you. In some of the newer developments, you could get a very nice townhouse for that price... or you could get a single family in an older neighborhood. I'd start by looking at Frederick zip codes (most people will probably agree to not look at the area immediately around Rt. 40), or places such as Middletown, Urbana, New Market, Walkersville, Jefferson, etc. The farther north you go, the fewer Jewish families you'll find, although the overwhelming majority of people are accepting of different faiths.

The FSK mall isn't great, but it has the basic stores. Bigger malls aren't far away though. There are many activities for the kids -- Frederick County is very family-friendly.

And I'm always surprised by all the Steelers fans in the area. Almost seems as many Steelers fans as Ravens and Redskins!

Good luck! I think you'll like it in Frederick.

That is a good idea, my only concern is that if Frederick is like cities up here in NJ you normally do not want to live in them (crime, gangs, etc), but live in the suburbs and only visit the cities. Is there a section of Frederick that is better or worse that the others?

Thanks to you also LittleBlackDogs. I am going to check out those towns in addition to Frederick. And thanks for the tip about route 40, I would never have known that. Now are there any areas that are strictly Steelers fans? That way I will feel very comfortable

There's a Steeler's bar on East st (Krug's). You'll find a lot of Pittsburgh fans because it's a natural place for someone moving into the Baltimore/DC Metro that still wants easy access to get home.

There's a couple blocks here and there throughout town but for the most part downtown is very nice with a lot of renovated housing with middle and upper class people living in them.

I'd be more concerned about some of the apartment and townhouse complexes in the ring around town then living downtown. Still, I lived in an apartment off of Rt 40 for a couple years and never had any problems. It's all relative - go for a visit.

Thanks for the advice. If it looks like I will get the job I am going to take my family down for a visit (and I will definitely visit Krug's although I can live among any fans...well except Patriot fans, I draw the line with them because they always beat the Steelers it seems.).

If you lived about 30 miles north in PA, the area would be loaded with Steelers fans. Frederick and parts west have a large percentage of Steelers fans because the local NBC affliate from Hagerstown showed all their games until the Ravens moved to Baltimore.

Once you get to Cumberland, MD you are actually closer to Pittsburgh than DC or Baltimore and over 1/2 of all football fans are Steelers fans.

Depends on what your priorities are; Steelers fan base, reasonably-priced houses, or schools. Frederick school system is not all that great compared to others in Maryland. If I was in your situation, I would just move to a MoCo town that's close to Frederick, even though that could mean ending up with just an average town home for your price range.

Hmmm....here is a site that ranks the Frederick County school system above that of Montgomery County.
