Default Germantown vs. Laurel

I will be working in McLean VA (sticker shock on apts) but plan to live in MD (i think!), moving from TX. I am looking at apts in Germantown and Laurel. Any ideas as to which is a better place to live? Germantown is near the church I plan to attend and Laurel may be a little bit closer to family. Thanks for any help.

Can't really speak too much for the laurel area, but Germantown is definitely nice. There are plenty of food options, both sit down and fast food. We have a movie theater and your standard retail stores such as Best Buy, Target, Home Depot, Walmart, Petsmart, Staples, Kohls, etc. There's quite a bit of open area at the Germantown Rec Park or Black Hills Park close by if you have kids or dogs. It's a pretty self sufficient little town; with the exception of work most everything you would need to do is within a 10 minute drive, or depending where you live, 5 minute walk.

Consider Milestone apartments, Canterbury, Pinnacle ($$), and possibly the Elms. Definitely stay away from Fox Run (might see it named The Point), Oak Mill, and The Hamptons. Anywhere else will probably put you in the middle of the two lists.

The only thing I can say about Laurel is it tends to be my general knowledge that Laurel is a little bit more ghetto since it is in PG county, but of course this is not from personal experience. Good luck!

Germantown seems to be closer to your job (though traffic is probably heavier on that side of the beltway). I agree that Germantown is more affluent than Laurel. It is nonetheless spotty and a so-called flash mob recently took place there.

Germantown if you're going to be working in VA. They both have horrible traffic but Laurel will take you through far too many traffic clusterf**ks every day. Baltimore traffic followed by MoCo traffic followed by NoVa traffic will drive you insane.

It will be a little less awful from Germantown, though.

Just live closer to McClean. How much is an extra 1.5-2 hours per day worth to you? And don't forget gas money.

And I live in Germantown...
