I may be moving to MD for a job in Lanham-Seabrook. I used to live in the DC area about 12-15 years ago, so while I'm kinda familiar with places, my info/impressions are probably way out of date. I'm looking at renting a studio/1BR and getting the most bang for my buck ($1000-$1200, with a washer/dryer and roach/bug-free!), and thus far I'm considering places in Laurel, Crofton, Bowie, and that general area, but I'm also seeing nice places in Glen Burnie. As things are right now, I might have a couple of hours to kind of scout out areas, but I probably will either not have the time or a vehicle to do much looking around when I'm in town briefly next week...
How bad would the commute be from Glen Burnie? How is the area? (I'd love to do western Annapolis, but the rents are high). If I go the Laurel route, how is the BW Parkway traffic? When I was in MD, it was awful unless you got on the road before 5 pm.
When I lived in MD, Crofton was fairly rural still--the commute would be nice, but has it been built up a bit? Is there some shopping/restaurants? Is Bowie a better bet for that?
Does anyone have any other suggested areas I should check out, with a somewhat reasonable commute to Lanham (maybe 45 minutes tops?)? I'd love to keep gas prices down, but the rents in Glen Burnie are attractive...
Thanks in advance for any advice you guys can offer.
Traffic will be bad on the BW Parkway. Gas will be cheapest in Laurel. Crofton population has increased considerably. Glen Burnie is kind of far. Bowie has parts really close to Lanham-Seabrook. I would choose any of them though, because, despite the traffic, commuting to that area probably won't be too bad (except for part of the BW Parkway). Bowie seems easiest. Another option is Hyattsville or College Park or Beltsville. When I worked in Lanham I lived in Beltsville. However, the apartment we chose was roachville. I'm just firing off quick thoughts as I'm not sure what to advise you to do.

On that budget, Laurel is probably the most realistic and closest. That is a really tight price range, can you afford more? If so then Bowie might be a little more realistic.
I live in Greenbelt. I commute to Largo and my commute on the beltway is about 12-15 minutes. In traffic it has stretched to 1/2 hr -- and one time 40 minutes but that was a major accident in the rain with one lane open only.
I'm exceptionally happy with my commute - esp. since I came from SoCal where my same commute (mileage wise) could be from 15 minutes to 2+ hours.
I find traffic on this side of the beltway to be pretty decent most times (at least for me going south). The parkway, however, is a different story. It can be more backed up - though I only really see it for a short time since I'm on it and off it real quick.
Thanks for your input, folks. I definitely would have more options if I could go $1300-$1350, so I'm going to have to raise the minimum salary I'd take for this job, I think. Guess I'll wait and see how realistic this employer is going to be about cost of living!

Why don't you just live in Lanham-Seabrook? There are several acceptible apartment complexes there and in nearby Greenbelt.
