Moving from FL in late November to work in Rockville (White Flint Mall vicinity). Keeping my house in FL, so looking to rent. Would like to keep it under $1500/mo, but only require one bedroom.

I need to be within walking distance to public transit because...uh, I don't drive in snow...and my son, who goes to college in DC, does not have a car. (He lives at school but I would like to make it easy for him to visit. He does have a bicycle, but he's a Florida boy and won't be using it when it gets cold.)

Also looking to avoid a horrendous commute when I do drive to work. (The office building has free parking and I own a Prius, so this is a cost-effective option.)

I prefer to rent a condo or something in a smaller building or complex. Looking for washer/dryer in unit (stackable OK) and relatively quiet neighbors, though I enjoy age/ethnic diversity. Don't need amenities like fitness center, pool, etc. Don't have a pet. Obviously, schools are not an issue.

Would like to live in a area where I can walk (safely) to shopping/dining/etc., and not have get in the car every time I want to go somewhere.

I've spent a fair amount of time in the DC area, but mainly in NoVA...Reston, Annandale. But this time around, it's MD, and I'm not as familiar with the housing options.

There are some nice places very close to the White Flint metro stop to be had in your price range. Really, almost anywhere along the red line would be OK - Bethesda would be my #1 choice in your situation but also the most $$$.

If you're going to work near White Flint Mall, then I recommend living near White Flint Mall. That location is a pretty good place to live and work. It's safe and relatively affluent. Plus, there is White Flint metro station. The area around Twinbrook metro is good too.

I recommend the Gallery at White Flint Place. Gallery at White Flint Place Apartment Ratings, Reviews, Map, Rents, and other North Bethesda apartments for rent from ApartmentRatings.com My female friend lived there and loved the interactions with the neighbors, amenities, and the quick walk to the metro for weekend parties in DC. Also, it's in your price range.

Assuming you don't charge your son rent, $1500 for 2 bedrooms isnt too easy to come by. the West Red Line is hard to find apartments with that budget. If you can up it a bit, Grosvenor would be good, it has loads of huge apartment complexes and is cheaper than Bethesda. Shady Grove at the the end of the Metro line is also good but get into the Grosvenor area if u can since its way more convenient.

Since son would apparently only be there for visits, probably more logical to rent a place with a large enough living room to accommodate a sleeper sofa or air mattress.

Have you looked at ads, etc., for rents that seem to fit your budget? You could come back here with questions about areas you are considering, to narrow down your search. Just asking for areas is, of course, of limited use. When do you plan to make a visit to look at places? I imagine there are lots of sites showing rentals, as well as property management (rental) companies you could contact. Rockville Pike has heavy traffic. Silver Spring rents are probably lower than those in Rockville, and there good bus connections (Metro rail not practical for that commute since you'd have to go all the way downtown first). Driving from SS not ideal, but better than driving up or down Rockville Pike IMHO. If you can find a place to live near Metro Rail, or someplace within a very short drive (or walk) of work, that would be great.
