Seems like with that kind of a high end budget, you could really live anywhere you wanted to.

We are, ah, older college students

He also comes from money. Not that I want to take free handouts from his parents but if they are willing... lol.

As for crime or desirability of Silver Spring, look around closely. It's not a city, so there are no real defined boundaries and wide range of places get ID'ed as Silver Spring. You have to look at the exact neighborhood. (The same is true of a lot of the suburbs here; there are places near Takoma Park that are labeled Takoma Park by the Post Office or real estate agents that aren't within the city limits and that can have a difference on stats.)

What schools is Takoma zoned to? Yeah, the zip code/city limit stuff here kind of confuses me!

Mostly Takoma Park Elementary and Piney Branch Elementary, although some kids are zoned to Rolling Terrace Elementary. Middle school is Takmoa Park Middle School and Silver Spring International. High school is Montgomery Blair.

Parts of Takoma Park are also in Prince George County, which confuses every one. It's a different school system.

Not since 1997 when the city was unified in Montgomery County. There's one Prince George's County Public School that has a Takoma Park postal address (Carole Highlands ES), and there probably are a handful of houses in 20912 that are on the Prince George's side of the line (and that may have Takoma Park as part of their postal address), too, but if you're within the city limits of Takoma Park, then you're in the Montgomery County school system.

Thank you very much, I have heard very good things about Richard Montgomery, and Takoma Park seems to be a good fit for us!

Montgomery Blair HS and Richard Montgomery HS are two different schools, miles apart from each other.

Ah sorry I get the Montgomery's mixed up. MB is in Silver Spring, and RM in Rockville, right?

Kentlands in Gaithersburg? Gaithersburg itself is not walk-able at all, but the Kentlands and Lakelands neighborhoods are sort of their own mini-city where you can walk to
1) Groceries - whole foods
2) Cafes - starbucks, and few other local coffee shops
3) Dining - lots of non-franchise restaurants and franchise restaurants
4) Shopping - PetsMart, furniture stores, etc

BUT, commute will be a huge pain... especially if you are trying to get into DC. I commute from Germantown (exit 15 or 13 on I-270) to Downtown Bethesda (by the Bethesda Row), and it takes me between 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. On a weekend without traffic, it takes me 20-30 minutes.
