What do you mean by a professional?

Someone who is a professional at something.

I always thought it meant someone who has a professional or graduate level degree and in addition their field has licensing credentials that must be maintained to work in the field.

In every job I have had as a corporate attorney (3 companies now...from a small Internet company to a medium tech company to now a Fortune 20 company) none of the lawyers ever wear suits/ties except when there is some important meeting with executives or we have some executives from another company coming by to negotiate with us. On a typical day, we are in business casual wear or jeans.

Everyone *says* they are professionals...i think they take it to mean they all have college degrees.
Those of us with advanced degrees beg to differ

Yeah. That unfortunately, with every trade school these days calling itself a "college", everyone thinks they are a professional
