I bought a car from my uncle who lives in Virginia. Before i got the tags switched, I got a parking ticket in Bethesda. I have now switched to MD tags. I was going to ignore the ticket, but the problem is that they already sent my uncle a letter in the mail, so they have his address on file. He lives in Charlottesville and never comes to MontCo. Also, the old license plates are not being used on any other vehicle. Should I go ahead and pay the ticket or just ignore it? What will Montgomery County do to him if I don't pay it? Will they refer it to collections?

The decent thing to do would be to pay it-ideally before it adds collection and court costs. I would say the presumption is that the owner is responsible for the parking ticket. If he was the owner, he has to pay it or have you pay it for him. Under extreme circumstances they could suspend his license, he might have a warrant for his arrest and; all this for a parking ticket you are responsible for. Sounds like a good way to start bad blood. If you went to court the judge might be impressed with your (belated) honesty and reduce the fines back to the original ticket (or not) and your conscience would be clear again!

Default Bethesda Maryland 2009 parking ticket

In December 2011 I received a bill from Montgomery County for fees and penalties because they said they received by 2009 parking ticket payment 4 days late. I have been trying to fight the charges and have had no luck what so ever. I already wrote to the attorney general who said they cannot help me. They turned my letter of to Montgomery County and they sent me a letter basically saying that I have no choice but to pay the ticket and there is nothing more they can do. What else do you recommend I do before I decide to pay this extortion fee?

Well, I would say PROVE IT Does the ticket (or regulation) say this payment must be RECEIVED by a certain date? When was the check deposited? What's the postmark on the envelope? It would not be unusual for someone to mail a check a day or two before it's due - presuming that would allow sufficient mail time - but it might take a couple of days (or longer) for a large government agency to process it. Unless they have a procedure where ALL checks are deposited the same day they are received or ALL checks are stamped in the day they are received - then there is nothing to say they didn't receive it on time but just took a few days to process! How much is the extortion fee, is it worth the extra effort? Also, it's over a year later?? If the notification took this long then it leads credence to the theory they may be inefficient!!
