Default Looking to rent an apartment or condo in downtown Silver Spring

My girlfriend and I will be moving to Silver Spring this June. She works in the China Town area and I work at Ft. Meade. I will be driving to work and she will be taking the metro, so Silver Spring seems like a good choice. What are some good complexes to look at? We would like a place with a a modern kitchen, closet space, open floor plan, and a balcony (but not necessary). Our max budget for rent would be about $2100/mo. Also, if anyone has another area recommendation, please feel free to let me know.

Not sure on the apartments in SS, but there are some really luxury type ones in Rockville for $1500 (The Grande) with free valet, gym, etc. Looks like a converted hotel with all the amenities, in a safe area, lots of shops, etc. A little farther commute, but right across from Rockville Metro and a 1/4 mile from 495 exit.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, Rockville is a little too far for me to commute. I would like to keep my commute under 30 min.

If $2100 is your budget for a one bedroom than you'll be able to find apartments all over the place. The Blairs, The Bennington, and Lenox Park are all nice and should be in your range, and they're walking distance to the metro. There are quite a few other buildings, some brand new, others with names I forgot, also within walking distance. Just go down there one weekend and go to the leasing offices and you should be able to get a tour of each building.

$2100 would be the max. If there are some nice places that fall under that number and have the listed items above, then I am all ears.

Check craigslist for condo rentals in the Silverton in downtown Silver Spring. That's where I live and like it. Most people rent their units for under $1800. The kitchens are modern, there is plenty closet space. Some units have storage units as well or people rent their storage units. PM me for more information. People forget there is a condo building here where owners rent their units. Bad economy so some have moved onto houses and want to rent them rather than take the loss in selling. It's the building in between the Bennington and Veridan on East West.

I haven't been apartment hunting in 3 years, but when I was, the apartments in downtown SS ranged from 14-1600 for a 1 bedroom. I don't know what the general price is now, especially with all these newer buildings around, but I should hope it's way less than 2100. I think if you call and ask one building you'll have an idea because they all try to stay competitive with one another.

I like living in downtown SS. It's a nice, pleasant place.

Default Renting in Apartment in April for $1595

I am looking for someone to take over my lease starting the middle of April 2012. The rent for this apartment is now $1815 at the minimum. I know that you are not coming to June, but this is definitely a deal for this area if interested. I know that it takes less than 30 minutes by Metro to get to Chinatown/Gallery Place stop. It's a very convenient location.

My Craigslist ad is here: Take Over My Lease in Trendy, New Apt Bldg (http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/apa/2900576376.html - broken link)

Good luck!

Property management companies, either independent ones or those that are part of a larger real estate office, might be something to consider checking. When I rented out a townhouse I owned, I used a couple of different p.m. companies. Your budget sounds adequate. Note that Silver Spring is not an actual town, but a large unincorporated portion of Montgomery County. "Downtown" Silver Spring is inside the Beltway, but much of SS is outside. I lived in a townhouse a mile from downtown, but later bought a single family home in the Aspen Hill section of SS, a few miles outside the Beltway. The former was a 5-10 minute walk to the Silver Spring Metro station (I commuted to DC) and the latter was about a mile from the Glenmont Metro station. Will she commute to her job in DC via Metro? Makes a difference in areas to choose.

Does Fort Meade have a housing office that assists employees finding housing, or has listings of rentals, etc. to consult?
