That's an interesting pdf. Amazingly New Carrolton is considered in a "walkable" area... I was there last weekend and it did not seem like a terribly walkable area, unless you live in the crappy apartments nearby.

To really think about it, it really is walkable, but it just doesn't have things that you necessarily would want to walk to. If they ever develop that area more, it already has a good foundation.

Montgomery Village isn't considered "walkable" which is silly as I can walk to stores, restaurants, and churches; I can also walk to the bus stop and take transit to Union Station or National Airport and go anywhere in the country without getting in the car which IMO is pretty impressive.

I think the spirit of the study is not the issue of just being able to walk, but the creation of an urban sense of place, hence the term "walkups" in addition to those places that are up and coming or are planned to be developed into an urban walkable center.

Interesting that Greenbelt, one of the original and model communities for walkability, is now among the worst offenders.

Greenbelt sector plan defeats its own walkability goals - Greater Greater Washington

Cloest to me - Silver Spring has been developed now for many years. Wheaton has gotten better recently too.

These are both rated platinum, so not bad huh? :-)

Has anyone ever heard of Agenda 21? Google it. Google Agenda 21 Maryland as well to see how the state is playing along with this.

I like my 1/2 acre lot and SFH in the suburbs and my choice to drive wherever I want whenever I want.

I looked this up and all I could see was a bunch of wacky-looking websites and conspiracy theories.

??

What gives, I'm sure the country isn't going to run out of leafy suburbs anytime soon.
