Default Why Does Montgomery County doesnt want to be affliated with Baltimore

My friends and I were discussing why is it when Montgomery County residents are asked where there from?? They always say the D.C. area and if you even mention Baltimore......Montgomery county residents get offended......Can someone explain???? I have to admit, I'm from Montgomery County and I always say the D.C. area

It is because the county is adjacent to DC, not Baltimore. That would be like mentioning DC to someone from Towson.

I'm from PG county and when people ask where I'm from I say "I live in a Maryland". If they want more specifics: "I live in Prince Georges County". Where's that at? "In the Southern portion of the state"

Why can't this be enough? Why do people have to acquaint themselves with the closest big city when they aren't a part of that city to begin with?

The usual argument is "Because no one knows where PG or MC is".... and?...

If they don't know where MD is then they gonna know after I tell them. Problem solved! People are ashamed that their area doesn't have any hype or notoriety? I don't care if PG is unknown, dry, boring, or whatever. It's a F**king jurisdiction not a football team!

It's the same reason why people who lives in Fairfax or Arlington says they living in Northern Virginia rather then just Virginia.

People choose the largest well-known metro area that is closest to them so they don't have to pull out a map to give someone a rough idea of where they live. I am not sure why this would surprise anyone.

When I lived in Germantown and people asked where I was from, I would say the DC metro area. If I said Germantown, they would say they never heard of it and I would tell them it is in Montgomery County. When they said they never heard of MC, I told them it was near DC. Then they got it. So, I started just saying the DC metro area to save us both the hassle.

I live in North Carolina now and if you asked me what city I live in and I told you Cary, you probably wouldn't know where that is. If I told you it is in Wake County, you probably still wouldn't know where it is. But, if I said it is right next to Raleigh, most would know exactly where it is, or at least a general idea as opposed to being near Charlotte on the other side of the state.
