Hi, can anyone recommend some safe, inexpensive neighborhoods which would be a good commute to Tenleytown, probably by train? I would be renting, possibly sharing a house/apartment, on a budget. I would not mind a longer train ride providing it was fairly safe. Thanks.

You haven't defined what affordable means to you, but in general I'd say that the odds are pretty low that you'll find something near Tenlytown that you could call affordable. That said, since you have indicated that distance on the metro is not much of an issue, anywhere on the red line will suit you fine. Rockville is pretty good, as is Gaithersburg (trade-off between affordability and desirability). But you can also look at the Silver Spring/Wheaton side of the red line, since you won't have to change trains anywhere.

If you're OK with transferring at Metro Center or Gallery Place, you may want to think about Vienna, or Falls Church. Just a few thoughts.

Does anyone know about the area near the Greenbelt metro stop? I know it's not really convenient as far as train switches go, but does anyone know about safety issues? I may have found something that is reasonably priced. My parameters for renting my own place are not higher than $1200; of course I am considering sharing as well.

If your budget is up to $1,200, you can live right in Tenleytown, or within 1 or two stops of it on the Red Line. Plenty of English Basements and carriage houses in nice houses that homeowners rent out. Here's one. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/d...517010158.html

Thanks Bubbamango, but I have pets. A few of the ads I saw do not take them.

That comes to me as a surprise, but if so, I think being close is definitely a better option since metro fares can get pricey.
