I can't for a minute imagine why people would be pronouncing Bowie as "boo-we." Especially considering how that's how it actually is pronounced and the city/town is named after Gov. Oden Bowie, as pointed out before. Imagine all of those students and faculty members of Bowie High School pronouncing the name of their own school wrong for over 40 years.

I pronounce Bowie with the the same vowel sound as in "ow."
People from Bowie get pissed off whenever I say it like that

Saying it as "boo" isn't a Southern thing. http://www4.uwm.edu/FLL/linguistics/...cmaps/q_3.html

You're free to pronounce it however you want, but as someone from Bowie, it is annoying to hear it pronounced incorrectly. It's not a matter of regional linguistics, the city was named after a person whose name was pronounced "boo-ee". Do you pronounce Houston as "how-ston"?

I pronounce it Mair-lin. Two syllables, no "d" on the end unless I am paying attention to my speech.

i have a voice search function in google maps on my smart phone, and it forces you to mispronounce the name bowie.

say it correctly, and it claims not to be able to find 'buoy, MD.'

So if my last name was spelled 'Red' but I pronounced it as 'Blue', would I be justified in cursing you out whenever you call me Red? My point is that people are not right - regardless if it is their name or not - if they don't know how to marry words to proper linguistical pronounciation of English letters.
