Montgomery County withdraws from FBI headquarters search

Montgomery County opted not to submit a response to the FBI's search for a new headquarters and has instead lent its support to neighboring Prince George's County's bid to lure the agency to a site by the Greenbelt Metro, Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker told the Washington Business Journal this morning.

Private developers in Montgomery could still compete to build the FBI a new 2.1 million-square-foot headquarters on locations they own, but Baker said Montgomery did not submit its own response to a request for information the federal government issued in December. The General Services Administration, which is overseeing the search process, said March 6 that it received three dozen responses to that RFI.

Representatives from Montgomery County were not immediately available for comment.
"Montgomery County has thrown its support to us," Baker disclosed during a meeting with the WBJ's editorial staff. While Prince George's has been frustrated in its prior efforts to lure federal agencies to its borders, Baker said the county has adopted a more focused strategy he believes will be a game changer in those efforts. A cornerstone of the strategy, he said, is to lobby in support of a single, selected site instead of just telling officials the county has plenty of land, choose one. The county has chosen the Greenbelt Metro site and has gained support from other local and state leaders to make a strong pitch for the property.

"In a county like ours, in order to have a competitive advantage, you've got to pick your site," Baker said. "It's not just us saying 'Hey, come out here,' we've got a plan."

The county is facing intense competition from other local governments in the region, including Fairfax County, given the economic development prospects a new FBI headquarters could bring.

It kind of does....you can't tell me that having the FBI, wherever it is, isnt a bad thing. I'm not sure where the large sites are located or the FBI criteria. Several along the I-270 Corridor, Tower Oaks has land, just off the Beltway, as does Lerner in Germantown. Perhaps Virginia will swoop in and land this.....watch all hell break loose.

IMO, there is more opportunity for PG to grab it than Montgomery. It's is more rural and larger than Montgomery.

True, plus metro access around the beltway. If I were a betting man, I'd bet PG will fail.....

So in a nut shell you two support the move to Virginia which will likely happen since Virginia is known to help scare Businesses away from relocating to Maryland then to somewhat magically land somewhere in Good Ol' Boy Country of Virginia.........

The campus needed to be near metro and the beltway. And the FBI wanted it to be a secure compound which doesnt fit with Montgomery's development plans for its Metro Stations. There really isnt any good place for it in Moco.
