hello everyone, I am new to DC area and would like to stay close (< 15 minutes drive) to White Oaks / northern Silver Spring/FDA/Glenmont Metro. Is there a residential area similar to the style of Adams Morgan that you would recommend? It would be nice to have a few friendly pubs, coffee shops, restaurants around the area.

I appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance!

Your best bet for vibrancy (pubs & restaurants) close by would be Downtown Silver Spring or the RT. 1 corridor starting from Hyattssville (up & coming) to College Park.

Thanks! I forgot to mention I am single student, so cost is a big concern. Location is more important than "classy" for me. Housing close to Silver Spring Metro seems to be really expensive. I am not in DC yet and I really have no idea at all about all the areas.

Then College Park is your best bet. Tons or student housing, apartments, and rentals. And they're building more. Check out the cities of College Park and Hyattsville. Don't search by zipcode. Hyattsville's zipcode includes a lot of other suburbs that aren't really Hyattsville.

is it possible to find anything close to Silver Spring metro for under 800? I am very easy going and I can even stay in basement.

It's unlikely unless you are sharing a place. There are basement places advertised occasionally in the Journal papers. If you are willing to do work around a place like cutting the grass, you might also get a deal.

Your best bet at this point is to send out fliers to single family home residential neighborhoods offering 800 for a basement. That is actually probably your best chance, as it would bring up the proposition of money for a family not really looking for rental profit but do have space available in their basements.

Other feasible potential courses of action you could take include applying for government income controlled housing (if any exist) or going to rental units and offering to work for free as an administrative associate and/or superintendent in exchange for free/reduced housing.

If the OP is a full-time student, then student housing abounds in College Park. Tons of regular and upscale student housing available.

I wish I can go around the neighborhood and send out flyers. I am a student living in NY, but will be interning for 3 months during summer at Silver Spring, so I really want to be close to the core and gain full experience of the city and have easy access to DC. I've actually located some housing close to College Park (lots of students subleasing during summer), but Silver Spring downtown seems to be a more exciting area. Am I right about that? I am staying for a short time in the area and I really want to make the best out of it within my price range.

It's not all that much more exciting. College Park is about the same distance from downtown DC by metro as Silver Spring is.

I'd suggest advertising on Craigslist in "housing wanted". Ask around with your family and friends in NY, and maybe something will turn up.
