I found a job at Tyson's Corner, VA, and I currently live in Rockville. How long is the commute from Rockville to Tyson's Corner, VA? I heard it's really bad, but I'm wondering exactly how bad it is, and if it's practical to commute without going insane. I will be working from 9 to 5.

Ugh... Gonna be bad.

At rush hour all of 495 is pretty bad. Rush hour meaning like 6:45 to 9ish and 3ish to like 6 or 7ish...

It's a crap shoot. 495 to Tysons can be clear but before you even hit that you have to deal with 270 which also sucks. If you can adjust your schedule to a 6am to 2pm commute that can be tolerable.

Where in Rockville? If you're up north (i.e. King Farm), you can bypass 270 by going through Potomac to Clara Barton. In either case, I'd second e30's advice and skew your hours a bit if possible. I had a similar commute a few years back and it was not too bad with a 7-3 schedule....(30-75 min each way) Of course, if you get any weather, then the commute time could double.

The key is to avoid the main roads as much as possible (i.e. use Georgetown Pike, Swinks Mill Rd, etc) and hitting them at the right time to avoid the local rush (school bus etc.).

I did Gaithersburg to Tysons for a year and wanted to kill myself. Some days it was fine (45 min-1 hour) but as soon as there's an accident anywhere near the bridge, you can effectively double that.

Any ability to adjust your hours or telecommute?

We make the trip from Gaithersburg to i-66 on the way to Arlington quite often. We leave at 6:30 am. It has been consistent for months now that 270 is slowish, but 495 all the way is just fine. I can't say after 7 am, but prior to that it's okay.

I used to do Potomac to Tyson's Corner and my commute was decent ONLY bc my hours were 6am-2pm. On days that I did work the 9am-5pm shifts, I hated it A LOT!!

I've done this commute, and a similarly arduous commute (Rockville to Arlington) that also used 270/495/legion-bridge.

The unpredictability will make it hard and if your job isn't forgiving about you arriving late sometimes, you'll have to allow extra time.

Getting home will be much harder than getting to work. I missed many dinners with the family.

Oh yea, I forgot an important point.

It's better in the summer, with all the people taking vacations.

So, if you do a test run at this time of year to see for yourself, it's important to understand that it will be different when summer is over.

I do a similar reverse commute (Arlington to Rockville/Gaithersburg), so I see all the traffic heading in the opposite direction every day. It's going to be a very rough commute for you, even if you can get your work to give you flextime. You'll need to have a very high tolerance for long commutes to make it work.
