Single female, budget is 1400 including utilities and I don't want to spend more than 100 on transport a month (paying 200 now). My work metro station is Takoma. Suggestions?

Since your transportation budget is limited, I would plan to live along the Ride-on bus routes which will easily get you to the Takoma Station stop. Those routes include the 12, 13, 14 and 16 which take you along Carroll Avenue, Piney Branch Road, Ethan Allen Road or New Hampshire Avenue. Checking Craigslist, I see there are many places along or Near Piney Branch. One is the Suburban Hill Apartments at $1025. I once knew a man who lived there. Also, the ads look OK, and it gets an 84% rating on Apartmentratings.com . The #16 Ride-on Bus will get you to Takoma Station. Obviously you should check it out in person.

I just responded to another post about living in SS and suggested Silver Spring Towers b/c my work colleague lives there and commutes by bus. Utilities are included in the rent and of course it's a short walk to the Metro and one stop to TP. Summit Hills is also nice but closer to your max budget for a studio which includes utilities. I also suggested further west on E/W highway but you'd have to do buses--Rollingwood and Round Hill of Chevy Chase.
