The fire companies in Prince George's weren't the only ones with Casino Nights issues. One of Calvert's had major issues too.

Getting rid of the firehouse gambling was also one of the steps used to smooth the way to legalize first slot machines and then table games.

The County has a relationship with illegal gaming going back to at least the 1940s. The Peace Cross area of Bladensburg was known for nightclubs that attracted gamblers, hookers, criminals, politicians and everyone else.

Except that after the 1940s the gambling was legal until the 1970s.

It's just a thrill to comment on threads with titles like this.

Race and politics. Plain and simple. Everyone has an opinion, and everyone is defensive as hell about that opinion.

If you like urban/suburban environments, then PG is a controversial place. If you want that "Leave it to Beaver" feel, then forget about it, but if you are really hopped up in 21st century pop culture, you may like it in PG because it's majority black and it's "in" to be all about injustice today (nevermind that humanity is a concoction of groups that judge other groups).

I take part of that back, because I know fools that live in Navy Yard today, somehow able to afford those ungodly expensive studio apartments there today, and who complain about "inequality" and "injustice" but by them moving into those plastic communities they have helped to perpetuate the issue of cultural migration that creates places like modern PG County. It's not like the large majority of people in PG today wanted to be in PG, they got financially pushed there.

This stuff is almost hilarious, because people sit in the bubble and try to explain why this is--and yet the answer is simple: people are what people are.

For me personally, PG County is a spectacle, a place where I can stop in to a restaurant and just by smiling, saying "hi" and tipping 15% to the wait staff, I see them smile back as though it's exceptional kindness on my part. I guess everyone there is just so happy that they forget to show even basic decency to those working at the stores or the restaurants or wherever.

I mean I was on travel and just got back. I remember at some point last year or earlier this year someone on here was talking about why PG and Charles County are so much better today because of the demographics...looks about the same to me...actually worse if you throw in that cookie cutter Timothy's Branch extravaganza that's popping up now.

It was refreshing to see such new developments such as National Harbor, hopefully more additions to the Woodmore Town Center, and Hyattsville Corridor. What is there to complain about?

I am under the assumption that those who speak negatively about PG County have been chewed up in the job market and/or have had difficultly making friends, or havent even lived in this area at all. These are obviously personal qualms and should not interfere with people's perceptions of PG County. I personally love this area, been here for almost 10 years. I see potential rebound in the inner beltway areas and more development in the suburban areas (Laurel, Bowie, Upper Marlboro, Brandywine) What is your opinion about the constant complaining about this place??

Yes I know I will be the "3rd Degree" from this as well
I lived in Suitland and Temple Hills for a year and a half and my wife and I were ready to flee and never look back.

-It does not have beautiful aesthetics. its largely-rubber-stamp America: strip malls, chain restaurants, wide streets with narrow sidewalks.

-cultural diversity is limited outside of Northern PG. I've never lived in a place with so much group-think in my life. Zero hyperbole. But that could be because it the only suburban area I've ever lived in for a substantial amount of time.

-I also find PG people to be extremely carer focused or self-centered. Jus, not a homey welcoming feel, lack of community compared even to SEDC.

-"soon to be amenities"=not many amenities. Add to that-very poor road and highways, sub-par and outdated (crumbling?) retail all over the place. Poorly managed apartment complexes abound (See: Morgan Properties)

-It's disjointed, ho-hum, weaker schools, lacking good public parks/space, long commutes, not all that culturally diverse. Many areas of older, ugly, smallish housing. Few urbanized/walkable nodes which people actually do tend to like whether they realize it or not.

-(very) high (violent) crime for a suburban area

-All that being said it represents something very important in America and especially for black people. Middle-class ability near a prosperous city center. With black elected officials.

Still, I'd prefer Western/North Western Baltimore County for black people. Aesthetically more pleasing (green sloping hills, more housing style variety, more park space) and much less traffic

I'd say PG County and Waldorf are about the same today, wouldn't claim all of Charles County fits under the same roof as PG.

Waldorf feels pretty different than PG to me, even more, strip-mally and faceless but bigger homes, calmer lifestyle, less crime but a totally unacceptable commute. A much smaller county and you can feel it instantly. It also feels much more like "the south"
