Straight from Wiki (I know, not a scholarly source): "Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data."

This creates facts, these facts are used in things ranging from the finance industry, to discrimination claims (oh yes, disparate impact is based on statistics), to determining insurance rates, to TV programming, on, and on, and on.

Correct, statistics can often be misused, issue here is that the first reference of the crime rates, are not really in depth statistical analyses; there is so many of demographic A, and so many of demographic A is in jail for some specific reason, that is simple 4th grade math.

The keys words being interpretation and presentation. Which ironically leaves things that may, at one time have been facts, open to things such as.....I don't know....interpretation and presentation (also known as spin). Just my 2¢.

I agree and stated such in my last post. however, the poster asserting that the statistics are incorrect, misinterpreted, etc, has the burden to prove so, instead of making fallacy claims regarding the statistics.

Okay, but why? How about the poster of said stats has the burden of proving beyond a shadow a doubt? Just wondering

Yes, the poster should have posted data from the FBI and other sources backing what he/she stated.

But the other poster was challenging the notion of statistics itself, basically showing they have no experience or education in statistics, and using a fallacy as an example. This is pretty much unacceptable in any debate.

I was merely showing why the poster was incorrect in their assessment of statistics, and showing the fallacy in their argument regarding statistics. The actual subject, race/discrimination, is not relevant to this.

Is it really the burden of anyone quoting the outcome of a statistical report, to include the detailed report, every time the outcome is reported? Isn't it enough that the results continue to be the same or at least close to the same for them to be accepted?
