We are moving from the NYC area for my husband's new job in DC. We're interested in suburbs within 40 minutes of his office. Our housing budget is up to $2mm. Any recommended areas to look within Potomac vs Bethesda? Would you recommend one over the other? They seem pretty different in terms of lot sizes, convenience - are schools good in both areas? Are both considered family friendly areas? Would one be recommended vs the other in terms of a sense of community/town amenities?

We love Chevy Chase, but our housing budget doesn't seem to go very far there!

Thanks much!

Bethesda is closer to the city, more shopping, etc. Also the public high schools in the Bethesda area are some of the best in the country (not that Potomac schools are bad though). I would definitely consider both family friendly, but Potomac is more suburban. Both great places to live in the DC area!

I'm sure 2mil can get you a large house in Chevy Chase. How big of a house are you looking for?

Seriously?? What relevance does the OP's husband's job have to the question? And what business is it of yours?

You say suburbs, but there are very suburban areas of DC. Unless you have something against living in DC proper you could try neighborhoods like Spring Valley, American University Park or Wesley heights.

2 million you can afford anything though you didn't say what type of property.

Well I think Bethesda is much better. Closer to DC, metro, etc. Potomac is more quiet but even in Bethesda if you are near Walt Whitman or Walter Johnson High schools you can have a big house, quiet neighborhood and not be remote.

If you need a mansion type place, then Potomac is better. Other than that I can't think of any reason Potomac would be better.

Deep down inside, everyone wants to know... but it is in bad taste to ask those types of questions.

Far as the OP... with that kind of money to throw around, get off the boards and hire someone. No one here can help you... the 1% hang out here... the bottom 1%.

The person is bragging by saying they can afford a $2 million house. They volunteered the info on a public forum but you think it's none of our business to comment.
