I may possibly be considering a job opportunity in the Silver Spring area. Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with the area. I'd be looking for great schools (kids are 6 and 8) and an area conducive to family living. I'd also prefer to be within 30 mins of downtown Silver Spring. Not sure about where to begin. Thoughts? Budget would be $1-1.2M.

Thanks in advance-

You would have no problem at all. I'd suggest Bethesda, either the Walt Whitman High School district or the Walter Johnson High School district. Alternatively, if you like closer-in, more traditional homes, look in Chevy Chase. The Montgomery County schools web site will show you the feeder schools. You can also use the Redfin website to search for properties by school district.

Here's a couple of listings in the Walter Johnson district. They are a bit above your budget, but will give you an idea of what's available in Bethesda:

Redfin.com is the best tool available for housing (including school standardized test ratings). Traffic is abysmal so the closer you can be to the job the better. As already mentioned, the "W" school clusters (Wootton, Whitman, Walter Johnson and Winston Churchill) are historically the highest rated schools, primarily due to de facto segregation.

It's pretty hard to find "bad" schools in Montgomery County as they're largely equitable as far as funding goes and all will offer whatever resources and coursework your kids might need (special ed, magnet programs, advanced coursework, foreign languages, arts, after school activities, etc.), but those "W" schools will certainly have the fewest number of poor students pulling down standardized test averages.
