It's all about the time value of money. And right now, The Federal government is poised to spend $900 million for the project. That money may not be around 10 years from now. Then Maryland would be on the hook for the entire cost. Jobs will be lost. Potential growth and revenue will be lost as well. Which would contribute to the lackluster performance of the current Maryland economy. I think certain politicians fail to realize that investments always cost a large sum of money up front. But the residual returns over 50 years makes the initial cost seem infinitesimally small. Hogan, as a devloper and a businessman should understand this.

Look at the Silver Line and how it jump started development in Tyson's Corner. Virginia didn't say, "Hmmmm, only 10% of Virginians use the Silver Line." they saw the future gains of constructing the line which are paying off now in development after development. Thousands of construction jobs are created as a result. They didn't step back and fold their hands because of the cost.

Hogan says he will change Maryland's perception as anti-business. But killing a project that will create thousands of jobs and promote economic growth will continue that trend. Yes, road repair in the rural parts of the state is needed, but you have to look where you can get the biggest bang for your buck. If the economic engines are invested in to produce more economic activity, there will be more money for roads.

So, what is Hogan to do? Roll back taxes? That doesn't look possible right now. I think he will increase taxes. Killing jobs by huge layoffs will further kill the economy.

This validates my point.

"We've had no indication from the transition team or from the administration that they want any slowdown or stoppage of activity," Smith told the Board of Public Works, which went on to approve the spending. "We would be spending money, but if we do not keep these projects moving forward, any delays could increase the cost of these projects in the long term."

What is Hogan to do?

Killing a 2.5 billion dollar boondoggle would be a splendid place to start.

Responding with boondoggle won't help you much in trying to convince Hogan that he should kill it. Especially when there's a mountain of evidence that it's the opposite. I'm sure if it was free, people would still call it a boondoggle. Got anything better than boondoggle?
