Yeah. I know that article. That was two years ago. I thought you read something more recent. If they haven't announced it officially in two years, I'd stick a fork in that idea.

It's that time again! Slowly but surely the construction is progressing. Driving by there this weekend I noticed the traffic signal is installed. The entrance area is starting to look like a fully completed entrance to the development with entrance/exit lanes, curbs, medians, hardscape, etc.

The current warm streak should help the construction crews catch up some from the snow a month earlier. We are now less than a month from the official start of Spring. This makes me think that now a late Spring opening is more realistic than the April/May time frame I was thinking of earlier. Judging from the slow pace the construction has taken so far, I will revise my guess one last time. The month of June is my last call. Which is still technically Spring until the 20th.

Noticeable updates are in BOLD.

Quote:
During the next two weeks the General Contractor, L.F. Jennings, will continue site construction around the Whole Foods Market and along Route 1. Underground utility work to install storm drains, water mains, conduits and site lighting is proceeding in multiple areas on the site as weather permits. Washington Gas Light (WGL) and PEPCO continue to bring service to each new building.

Installation of curb and gutter, around the Whole Foods Market parking lot, will continue as weather permits. Installation of the new traffic signal at Van Buren St. and Route 1 is being completed. After the curb and gutter is in place, if weather permits, the parking lot in front of the Whole Foods Market will be paved and the first course of paving around the Whole Foods Market will be placed. Construction of the three new entrances from Route 1 into the development has been completed, except for final asphalt course and striping which will be completed this Spring.

Construction of screen walls, seat walls, sign walls and other site hardscape structures in Gateway Park (buffer area adjacent to Route 1) and around the Whole Foods Market parking lot is ongoing as weather permits. Bio-soil storm water retention devices are being installed as required.

The construction of a large permanent storm water management pond in the NE corner of the site has started, but progress has been handicapped by winter weather. WGL has completed the relocation of a gas line running along Rhode Island Avenue (aka Maryland Avenue) to the west of the railroad tracks and is now cleaning up from the work. The installation of a new storm drain outfall pipe under Rhode Island Avenue, from Wells Run to the site, is ongoing.

CSX Crossing:Work has started on the much awaited new CSX crossing at Riverdale Park Station. The bridge construction work is significant and required the closing of the former ERCO plant parking lot between the Rivertech Court cul-de-sac and Lafayette Avenue. While this route has been used for years as a “short cut” from Lafayette Avenue to M-Square, some vehicles are going around the barriers only to find parts of the road removed. As a reminder, all vehicles should honor the signs noting closure of the road. This closure will continue until the new bridge is open – estimated to be in April 2017.

The initial construction activities include the relocation of existing electrical, communication and gas utilities that run parallel to the CSX tracks. This relocation has started with the demolition of pavement where new utilities will be installed. Utility relocations are necessary for the construction of the new bridge over the CSX railroad tracks.

Future Plans:
  • Two week to two month look-ahead –
    • Continue all of the above work but start additional buildings to provide new retail to the area.
    • Perform Spring landscaping for areas completed during winter months.
    • Opening of Gateway Park.
  • Two to six month look-ahead –
    • Start residential/parking buildings.
    • Start interior fit-out of Whole Foods.

To me it feels like the progress building this place has been extremely slow. Feels like a solo handy man and his retired buddy could have finished this whole foods from the ground up in roughly the same time frame. They haven't announced anything new in regards to businesses or developers for this place in almost year.

Right now they've got:
Whole Foods
Hyatt House
Old Line Bank
Bella Spa
(Habit Burger)

At this rate, seems they may never finish the project.
