As DistrictSonic mentioned, the neighborhoods surrounding downtown Silver Spring would make sense (some being in your price range, others definitely not), as would going up 29 a bit for the Four Corners/Woodmoor area neighborhoods. If being close to a metro is key, Forrest Glen might make sense, but it's entirely residential so you'd have to drive/metro to Silver Spring/Bethesda/DC for amenities.

Yeah if they went just a little higher than $500k they may hit a sweet spot, many are listing for around $525-$529k in some of the areas. Silver Spring may be the better place than Takoma for them.

Not familiar with housing prices or schools around Forest Glen, but it is a very short drive downtown SS or Wheaton for shopping (could walk to Snider's grocery)/libraries (new one just debuted in SS) and a hospital (Holy Cross) is just down the street. Heck, you could take the Metro one stop each way to reach plenty of retail. It's also about halfway between the Sligo Creek trail and the Rock Creek trail.

We were in a similar situation a few years ago, and our experience was looking at many compromises to live in Takoma Park, more than we could justify.

They may also want to look into Silver Spring...There are some places in their budget there too in some decent neighborhoods.
What issues are those?
