Hello!

I am new to the City Data community and will be moving up North to take an internship at the University of Maryland, College Park. I thought I would ask about certain areas around the University to reside, wanting to be as close to the University as possible; budget around $1,300/month for apartment (rent), currently have a car, and single who likes a good social scene (not a partier, but venture out to get a drink from time to time and/or catch a game, show, etc.)

Are there any suggested areas that would be an easy commute and perhaps areas to avoid, if any? Any help is much appreciated with areas and/or apartment complexes to check out, as I will be new to the area.

Thanks!

Baltimore Campus, College Park or Catonsville (UMBC) or some other campus?? If it is the Baltimore medical campus, please search the Baltimore sub-forum. There have been many similar questions. Otherwise I can tell you that there are many rental apartments with walking distance of the medical school. Don't look too far west of the campus, otherwise you would be in sketchy areas.

Hi GoldenAge1,

My apologies. My internship will be at the College Park campus. Although, I have heard the Baltimore Campus is located in a neat little area of Baltimore.

Thanks!

OK, College Park is fine to live in, and your budget will probably get you a decent one-bedroom. You probably want to avoid the apartment buildings with too many undergraduates. Just check the commercial apartment rating sites or the reviews on Google Maps. Perhaps the graduate student office will also have apartment listings. I like the looks and location of the Westchester Towers, but some review are mixed. Beltsville, Adelphi and Greenbelt will also have acceptable apartments.

For socializing, you can take the Metro into DC.

Can't speak to specific apartments but Old Greenbelt, Hyattsville, or College Park have some good areas.

I lived in the Mosaic at Metro in Hyattsville for a few years, it's a nice place. My sister lived in Post Park in Hyattsville as well, again nice place. They both are as close to the metro as you'll be able to get, especially Mosaic.

I was also told about this area and the Art's District in Hyattsville. Seems like a neat little community. Is this area still up and coming? (from the looks of it and articles I found, it seems much has been built up the past few years).

Great, thank you! I will check out the reviews. I was also looking at the Beltsville and Adelphi area. Seems like they are much smaller communities (I'm going to visit in a few weeks to view locations). Any areas to avoid in Beltsville or Adelphi?

Adelphi has an apartment community called Daniel's Run. My best friend just moved from there to be closer to her job in VA. It was nice, quiet, safe, and had secure access entry.

Only part of Beltsville to avoid is the apartments next to High Point HS. Other than that you will be fine...

I will certainly check that out. Just curious, do you happen to know how the Landover/New Carrollton area is?
