Yep, I figured that there would be some administrative and support positions but that mix seems a little high

Well I certainly can't imagine even 1000 custodians working at the new HQ, so a majority the remaining 12k will most likely be administrative, financial etc.

LOL...I don't see that either but Admin jobs typically imply overhead versus jobs that contribute to the bottom line. That said, 50% seems a little high. I'm used to seeing those positions being no more than 25%. It's whatever though since they will be based in Crystal City. As we discussed previously on the board, MD needs to figure out what they need to do to not only make themselves appealing to the workforce that Amazon will bring but more so to other companies that looking to locate in the area and the employees that will work for them.

Take that $8 billion and create incentives for new MD residents. Tax breaks, home loan subsidies, down payment assistance. That's how you do that. It certainly won't add up to $8 billion. Maryland can do that with $200 million.

Dare I say give developers additional incentives to build around the blue and Green (Yellow possibly returning to Greenbelt) lines. Build some new schools ($1 billion). Then you have $6.5 billion left over to woo some other corp.

$1 billion gets you 8 high schools or 12 middle schools or 18 elementary schools. Prince George's right now has an almost $3 billion maintenance backlog for its existing schools.

Maryland’s Amazon loss prompts questions about its competitiveness

Quote:
“One of the reasons Maryland created such a large incentive package for Amazon is because we know our business climate is not as competitive,” said Basu, whose Baltimore firm, the Sage Policy Group, conducted the state’s economic impact study of Amazon’s potential benefits but was not involved in the bid.

“We know we need a massive package to attract them,” Basu said. “Even with that, Amazon said, ‘Thanks but no thanks.’ ”

One thing, Basu is going to say that no matter what. Had Maryland gotten Amazon he would have said he was surprised because our business climate is so bad. He's really a one trick pony.

How does Basu have so much clout? It seems like he's in most news stories about Maryland's business climate.

He's a walking, talking self promotion machine. He's been right a couple times and he under bids his competition for consulting contracts.

Well if he performs similar services for less money, that sounds like a good thing?
