Kensington, MD and Garrett Park, MD and the various incorporated areas of Chevy Chase, MD all have a smaller town feel (though are in the middle of major urban sprawl of course) if you want to be near Bethesda. Please tell us what your budget is and how far of a commute you are willing to tolerate so we can help you better.

Not much small town up that way...solid sprawl. You could find smaller feel if ya go out the 270 corridor a bit. Rockville, Damascus maybe.

You're in luck! Bethesda has excellent schools.

Seriously, a bit more detail on what you're looking for would enable people to offer some opinions that would help you.
