Yes, Charles is diverse but the sense of "entitlement" among the general population is what kills it for me here. The list goes on but to answer the original posters question- YES commuting can take up to 90 min. I use to commute to Alexandria from Pomfret and if I was taking 210...90minutes wasn't impossible. Back roads are helpful but at some point you all dump out into the same place.

Good luck!
Also it seems like everyone is starting to move to St. Marys.

Default question

So this is very interesting - We are staying with my family temporarily in the older section (20602-and yes it is rough here) of waldorf. So far we have decided to try to buy a home here in this area and my husband will commute to work. I think we have been everywhere looking for homes- new ones old ones you name it.. and YES we are one of THOSE families- we are not used to being surrounded by blacks.. not that its a bad thing bc just like every race there is the good and the bad but its a bit of a culture shock for sure. Like someone else was saying in an earlier message: we are having that thought run through our head "do we want to be the only white family on the block" (Id think the same thing if it were any other race as well) Right now we are considering White Plains (even though im not CRAZY about the school ratings that the homes we liked are zoned for) or possibly hughesville and La Plata.. the only thing with the other two areas is that it is much further from the Alexandria area where my husband works.

Can any of you recommend any other areas that maybe I havent researched? Im looking for a good elementary school, and middle school and something affordable, maybe something more culturally diverse.

I can't help your situation, but I'm going to give you a few pointers on race relations.

First, to refer to black people as blacks, is highly offensive. It's true that every race has it's good and bad, but the tone of your post makes it seem as 'blacks' are different, since as you said, you're not used to being around them.

Second, in most cases the mentality and the values of people generally are tied more to their economic status than their race. You would be surprised how other races in the same economic status do that is similar to 'blacks'.

I don't find it that offesnive, now if it was the blacks I'd agree.

Justcuriousmom, I'd find more of a balance although how would know every family on the block is black? Did you knock on every door?

I have to agree with your first sentence. I'm white and have heard people say the same about living around "whites" and it didn't bother me. 95% of my neighbors are black. I told one of my neighbors that the term African American made little sense to me as my sister - white - was born in Africa and is an American citizen. What does that make her? He saw the sense of it but he is in a high profile position with the federal government and has to adhere to the PC terminology which bleeds through into his everyday life. The funny thing is his family is from the Midwest and they don't care one way or another. I think a lot of it has to do with our proximity to DC.

I think everyone needs a little culture shock every now and then.

Well everyone has their standard of what's offensive, but to me it was more than the term blacks, it was the way it was used. It's as if this person was saying that black people are different. I mean they are human beings not a species of animals, why do we have to refer to people as blacks or whites.

Oh my goodness honey look at all the blacks in the neighborhood.
