Hi all, I'm 26 years old and female and I will be relocating to the DC area and working at the Suitland Federal Center. I am intent on taking public transit and would prefer DC and MD over NoVA. I am trying to decide between two areas to move and would really like your input. I will be visiting them personally soon as well.

1 - University Town Center - Hyattsville. Near Prince Georg Metro green line. This sounds convenient and there seems to be enough to do in the surrounding areas.

2 - Takoma Park - I am really interested in living here. I've read all about it and it sounds awesome to me. However, it is along the Red Line...Does anybody make this commute using public transit? Is it difficult to hop from the red line to the green line at ft. totten or gallery/chinatown. I am leaning towards Takoma, but want some opinions on the commute. The Metro trip planner said it would only be a 40 min trip.

Reading these forums have helped me out A LOT in getting to know the area. Thanks!

Takoma. The Metro transfer is trivial.

I commute on a daily basis from Silver Spring (Red Line) to Navy Yard (Green Line), a similar kind of commute as what you'd have in Takoma. A 40 minute ride between the 2 stops sounds about right. At rush hours, you won't have to wait for long for a train, especially on the Red Line. At non-rush hours, there can be a bit of a gap between trains on the Green Line in particular.

One minor thing to keep in mind with the commute is during baseball season you'll have somewhat more crowded than normal trains in the PM rush between Suitland and Navy Yard because of fans going to Nationals games from the Branch Avenue park-and-ride. That extra crowd of riders shouldn't be too much of a problem though (still should get a seat at Suitland pretty easily).
